Big Breakers

The next part of your warm-up routine is getting a feel for putts with big breaks to them. Try a variety of mid-length putts with plenty of break: left to right, right to left, uphill and downhill. Try different paths on which to play each putt until you can play for the maximum amount of break and still have the ball reach the hole. It won’t be going very fast as it’s getting to the hole at that point, which means if it misses the hole it won’t roll too far past and leave you a tough comebacker. The idea is to test out different angles and get a feel for how pace and path work together on the greens that day. You want to find the combination with which you are most comfortable, that will encourage commitment and not give rise to doubts or second thoughts as you are addressing the ball. Keep in mind that playing for maximum break usually conserves mental energy.
